Today in the United States the Prom is a big event in many teenagers’ social lives. Its all about the prom dress, limousines, music, the dance, and the Prom Queen and King. It’s an all night event that sometimes lasts through the next day. Prom-a very fancy dance indeed! How long have there been proms? Are they everywhere? Good questions……decided to find out.
The word prom comes from the word promenade, meaning guests marching into a ballroom, announcing the beginning of a ball or elaborate dance. Proms have been around for a long time. In the U.S. there were college proms in the 1800s – as mentioned in a college student’s journal in 1894. High school proms were recorded in yearbooks starting in the 1930s. Then in the 1950s they become big events, with prom queens, the perfect dress, and all that goes with The Prom. Similar events are held in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America (Mexico and Canada besides the U.S.), Australia, New Zealand, Central and South America and the Caribbean. With different names, they take place at the end of the school year in high school for juniors and seniors all over the world.
And then there is Anti Prom – a protest of the extravagances involved with prom. Less elaborate, and probably just as entertaining, with music chosen by the students, less rules, a good bit of anti-establishment fun.
